Illness Policy

 
 

Children should be sent/kept home under the following circumstances:

The child does not feel well enough to participate comfortably in usual activities.

The child requires more care than staff is able to provide without affecting the health and safety of the other children (one on one care, for instance).

The illness or symptom is on the following list of conditions for which exclusion is required.
 
 

 

SYMPTOMS OR ILLNESSES WARRANTING EXCLUSION:

Chicken Pox (until blisters have crusted)
Communicable illnesses such as measles, mumps, meningitis, diphtheria, rubella, salmonella, tuberculosis, giardia, e coli or shigella (until judged not infectious by the health care provider)
Conjunctivitis or eye discharge (until 24 hours after treatment)
Coughing that is severe, uncontrolled, rapid, or causes difficulty breathing (except asthma that is under a doctor’s care)
Diarrhea that is accompanied by fever or vomiting or uncontained diarrhea
Fever that is accompanied by behavior changes or other symptoms of illness (rash, sore throat, vomiting, etc.)
Head lice, scabies (until treatment started)
Hepatitis A (until 1 week after onset of illness)
Herpes (if area is oozing and cannot be covered)
Impetigo (until 24 hours after treatment starts)
Rash with fever, rash that spreads quickly, has open wounds, or is not healing (seek medical advice)
Ringworm (until treatment started; must be kept covered 48 hours after start of treatment)
Strep throat (until 24 hours after treatment has started and 24 hours after fever has ended)
Upper respiratory complications (large amount of colored nasal discharge, extreme sleepiness, ear pain, fever above 101 degrees)
Vomiting (2 or more episodes in the past 24 hours or 1 episode accompanied by behavior changes, fever, diarrhea or other symptoms)
 
 

NOTE: Unless otherwise stated, child must be free of symptoms for at least 24 hours before returning to school.
